Magic: the Gathering News for September 2003
PT Boston: The Platy Perspective
PT Boston had a plethora of fashion dos and don'ts to choose from. Again the Scandinavians scored highly on the fashion level, and seeing a group of them in person made me realize how much better they not only age than Americans but how much better looking in general most European Magic: the Gathering players are than American magic players. A Scandinavian magic player can pass as a fairly normal person within society, whereas place an American magic player within a social situation and their true roots soon show.
Wizards To Pretend Mirrodin Unknown Until At Least November
RENTON, Wash. -- Wizards of the Coast announced Friday that all employees were to continue to pretend that the contents of the Mirrodin set were unknown by the general public, and that this policy would continue until November or possibly December.
Behind the Mirrored Din
On September 19th, I had the privilege of meeting with two employees of Wizards of the Coast over lunch. One was a member of the design team for Mirrodin, and the other was on the development team. On condition of anonymity, each agreed to speak with me and provide a revealing glimpse into the development of Magic’s latest expert level set. After several dozen doughnuts and a few beverages, we began the interview.]
Wizards Clarify Mindslaver Rules
Renton, WA -- The attention of the casual Magic community is being called to a small but important section of the new Mirrodin rules concerning Mindslaver, a powerful rare artifact that promises to be useful if your opponent needs a break from thinking through his actions. The rule, previously thought unnecessary to highlight due to the power of common sense, reminds players that a player who steals control of their turn does not also control their non-game actions, like whether they will use the restroom, eat their Ultra-Pro sleeves, or watch Gigli without some form of eye protection.
Yet Another Rant From MD
Whew. It's been a long, long time, but I'm back to hit you with more no-holds-barred opinions and in-depth deck analysis. Minus the in-depth deck analysis, of course. Hopefully, this will be the first in a monthly series of rants and opinions that I'll be writing. Of course, if I don't follow through with this, I will flame myself in an upcoming article.
Wizards Release New D&D Based Set
Renton, WA - Upcoming Magic: the Gathering expansion Mirrodin will have strong ties to the popular Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, it was revealed today. "Yu-Gi-Oh just wasn't cutting it for us" Mark Rosewater said in a press release. "There's only so much you can steal from another card game before you run out of ideas."
The New Look of Mirrodin
In today's Magic Arcana, the 'Style Guides' from Mirrodin were showcased.
Wizards Announce 'Heavy Metal' Chase Cards in Mirrodin
Renton, WA -- Wizards of the Coast announced in a press conference today that it will be adding metal plated ‘Heavy Metal’ cards to follow the theme of the highly anticipated release of the set Mirrodin, which takes place in a metallic and mechanical plane.
Isochron Scepter Introduces New Skill Testing Mechanic: Reading the Card
In an article on Sideboard Online last week, a new card was revealed that has the whole Magic community talking. The artifact in question, a 2 mana artifact with ‘Imprint’ for Instants, introduces a whole new skill testing mechanic to the world of Magic: reading the card.
Making Magic: You Get to See Another Card
Welcome to another preview article! Nothing makes me more indescribably excited than to reveal another tiny element of my ultimate masterpiece of game design: Mirrodin. While some are ruining the fun of Mirrodin -- and Magic: The Gathering as a whole -- for everyone by leaking card information in the form of partial spoiler lists, they certainly aren't as intimately familiar with my precious child as I am. And, as I've said in the past, people want to hear about new cards from the cards themselves and from official previews -- not some spoiler list on the net.
MiseTings Article Competition: Mirrodin
Ok, here's the deal. The person who writes the best (most entertaining and/or well written) article dealing with some aspect of the upcoming Mirrodin expansion will win . . . a sealed box of Mirrodin boosters!
Magic Online v3.0 Preview
Renton, WA -- In the wake of the disastrous release of Magic Online v.2.0, Wizards of the Coast today announced that it will accelerate work on version 3.0 rather than waste precious man hours fixing the thousands of bugs, glitches, and infinite logic loops that have caused 2.0’s countless crashes. Among the exciting new features of MTGO version 3.0: “paper cards”, “flesh and blood opponents”, and a network of thousands of independently run “brick-and-mortar card shops” all over the world.
