Darksteel Card Restricted In Type I
As part of the June Banned and Restricted Announcement, the DCI announced Friday that a card that will be created for the 2004 Magic: The Gathering expansion called "Darksteel" is hereby restricted in the Type I format and banned in Type 1.5, as of July 1, 2003.
"This card, once R&D invents it, will lead to the creation of one or more completely degenerate archetypes in the Vintage format," said Level 5 Judge Jeff Donais on Friday. "The restriction of this yet-to-be-conceived card is absolutely necessary, and couldn't come at a better time, except perhaps 'in the future.' "
The card will probably be blue, Donais said.
Type I players throughout the world rejoiced, having been terrified, at some subsequent time, at the prospect of having to play against the hypothetical card.
"I will have been saying and proving for weeks, in a future timeline, that this card is completely broken and needs to be restricted immediately," said veteran player Mike Long. "I also will have cited hours upon hours of playtesting. I will have shown, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this card, whatever it's going to do, is utterly degenerate."
Vintage format columnist Oscar Tan agreed. "A weblog that I'll create in the future, while utterly indistinguishable from something that I simply made up, will illustrate nicely the sorts of broken things that this future card will do via my unique brand of hand-picked retrospectives and personified fantasy-warrior commentary," Tan said.
Darksteel will be the second set of Mirrodin block, and will go on sale sometime in February.
