Wizards Increase Prices, Market Set to Implode
Early last week, Wizards of the Coast announced a price increase of the MSRP on boosters and tournament packs, raising booster prices to $3.69 (previously $3.29) and theme decks and tournament pack prices up to $11.29 a piece. Players worldwide with loud opinions and terrible spelling skills immediately blasted the proclamation.
“damn WOTC, i'm already short of money and they are going to make me even more short of money!!!! curse u....curse u....WOTC. damn!!!!!!” ranted icycorupter on the StarCity forums.
“I dont blame wotc i blame hasbro they are the ones probably behind all of this they own wotc” user iratethemad speculated the obvious at MTGnews.com.
Mark Jordan, the WoTC VP of Sales was quick to try and calm flaring temperatures. “All we’ve given is a little, tiny increase in card prices. It’s nothing. It’s just inevitable inflation. We aren’t trying to make money in a scheme similar to one expressed in the movie Office Space.” Office Space, a wildly popular comedy film, contained a memorable plot to become filthy rich by extracting minor change on every transaction, just like in Superman 3.
“Of course, the players will be getting something more for their money as well. We plan to introduce a new, rare, misprinted card in every booster pack. These cards may have problems in the art, incorrect color borders, or a different card back, not only making them a collector’s item, but completely unplayable!”
Jordan continued to explain. “This misprint idea came accidentally. We appeared to have let a Scourge Goblin Mob precon through with misprint, Harry Potter backs. It seems that a copy surfaced in the market, and was sold on Ebay for an exorbitant amount.
“When we saw what really has a value of only about ten bucks go for thirteen thousand, we knew we were on to something. And we can assure that this won’t be the last price increase players will see. We’ve got to keep up with the demand of the market.” Jordan closed.
