Area Man's Red Deck Does Not Win

By: 8man - December 29, 2003

Bloomington MN -- Area man Andrew Lipkin was shocked this past Saturday at a local qualifying tournament for Pro Tour: Kobe, when his Red Deck failed to win. Lipkin, a mediocre player from a neighboring suburb, had cobbled his deck together that morning, yet had high hopes for his deck.

"Well, after skimming the Starcitygames.com coverage from New Orleans, I knew that I would have to do a lot of playtesting to find the best deck in the format, or at least one I could find cards for. I figured, FNM should be enough right?"

Lipkin had previously attended the Friday unsanctioned draft at Sports Card Emporium, going 3-1 in the swiss and losing in the first round of the top 8, asking anybody who was still in the store after his elimintation if they had a deck he could play the next day.

"I was really optimistic that somebody would have a Tinker deck lying around in their bag or something, but most people had left already or were over at God Father's Pizza getting hammered. Everybody else I talked to just asked me if extended was the same thing as 1.5 or asked me if I had any Siege Gang Commanders for the JSS the next day. I was a little dissapointed"

Dejected, Lipkin sent off an 11th hour email to a long list of 'friends' asking them to bring cards or a deck the next morning.

"Well, basically I was set to play whatever deck that was to offered me that had finished best at New Orleans. I think Justin Gary won right?"

After receiving no replies save for a "omg die" from local heart-throb Gerry Thompson, Lipkin went on to his trusty Starcitygames.com to blatantly copy the cheapest deck he could find. He found Dan Cato's 9th place PT: New Orleans build of Red Deck Wins, and immediately took a liking to it. The deck did not however, take a liking to him.

Three rounds later Lipkin had dropped at 1-2 and was last seen losing large stacks of rares to what appeared to be a thirteen year old child in a game of Texas Hold'em.
