So a friend is trying to broaden my musical horizons. I've always had pretty broad musial tastes, and am as likely to listen to folk music as to rap-rock. I regularly listen to Harry Chapin, Unknown Prophets, Ben Folds, Pachebel, and Salif Keita.

This does not satisfy my friend. My friend is convinced that the only type of music that deserves being called music is metal. Industrial. Acid. I just don't like it. It's just the way my neurons are lined up or something.

We've recently come to a compromise in the meeting between classical and metal, two genres that work together extremely well. Metalica's S&M was the first stop. Gotta love that album. Next was Apocolyptica, a cello quartet that has amazing versions of songs like Metalica's One. Finally, it was Trans-siberian Orchestra, a group that recently scored a semi-hit with Christmas Eve Sarejevo. Mephistopholes' Return is one of the greatest songs I have heard.

Anyone know of any other groups that blend the two genres?

The only classical sensibility Yngwie Malmsteen shows is the skill at shredding ober ever single song and being a pompous ass. He's pretty much Paginini part 2, but Paganini wasn't ass enough to use distortion pedals.

Trans-siberian Orchestra, was the ochestra that was on the metallica album.............. besides, apocolyptica has really come to their own. My Dying Bride has SOME ochestral arangements... may be to dark and heavy for you. You might like some Malmsteen, check out Guitar Solo, he plays behtovens 5th on the guitar, mind nubming solos, lets face it, this guy is a god. Alot of new prog bands mix in orchestral arrangements.

I don't know...if you want to hear classical then why not listen to classical? Classical is savage tech...I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have it when I studied in college. My faves are Bach, Vivaldi, Purcell and Handel.

Agreed. I say open up your mind and listen to some classical music. There are so many periods and types to choose from you are bound to find something you enjoy (for me it is Baroque).

Rufus...check out Dead Brain Cells "Universe" if you like prog metal. That was released in the early 80's and it still holds ground. I'm sure that Dar would agree. 1 more score for Canada.

If you were looking for downloads...good luck...but you might be able to find it on their website or through a small distribution house. It is definitely worth it.

That entire album is awesome. It was 10 years ahead of the times even with subpar production.
