John Rizzo Wins Draft

By: Ged - January 01, 2002

Standish, Maine — In an unprecendented show of skill, John Rizzo won an 8 person draft at his newest magic hang-out, Crossroad Games. After rounding up a couple younger Pokemon players, the 6 Magic players who showed up on that cold Tuesday night had enough people to play a sanctioned draft.

Rizzo reportedly went 3-0 with a green/blue deck he drafted, ploughing through one of the Pokemon players in the first round, who supposedly made a comeback to finish at 2-1. In the second and third rounds, Rizzo defeated such store regulars as Charlie Widdis and Joe Spizzuco.

"Yeah, I would have beaten him if he hadn't started babbling something about his 'studly Nightscape Familiar' halfway through the match. It really distracted me," reported Mr. Widdis, Rizzo's second round opponent.

"His shiny bald head is really annoying, it was almost hypnotizing me during our third game," said an unhappy Mr. Spizzuco. I expect the DCI will want to investigate these claims, as hypnosis is most certainly not allowed in tournament play.

Upon winning the draft, Rizzo was so overjoyed with the performance of his deck that he decided to add 20 cards to it, and play it in the next PTQ. "I think he has a really good chance, that deck he drafted might shake up the metagame at Boston!" said the resident "pro" player, Mike Emmert. Emmert recently played the swiss rounds to a #1 seeding at a Boston PTQ, and anticlimactically lost 0-2 in the quarterfinals of the top 8. "He's like that in bed, too..." muttered Emmert's girlfriend, upon hearing the news.
