Morphling Reduced to Chump Blocker

By: Anonymous - January 09, 2002

Called "Superman" by its supporters, called a "kick in Green's head" by its detractors, few have ever considered Morphling anything less than a highest-magnitude threat, but in a stunning turn of events yesterday, PTQ player John Firth's Morphling was forced to chump block his opponent's Verdant Force.

Morphling's unfortunate demotion came early in the day during the 2nd round of the Pro Tour Qualifier. Firth got off to a slow start when his Oath deck stalled at two land and was unable to find the Oath against local Michael Webster's Secret Force deck. Webster quickly got out the "best fatty ever printed" and pummeled Firth down to 6 life in short order. Firth cast the Morphling in desperation to stave off imminent death.

Despite the sacrifice of his former champion, Firth was unable to salvage the match. He drew a needless land with his steeply-priced final turn and quickly scooped.

"I still can't believe it," remarked John after the match. "Morphling has always been a gamebreaker for me. I never though he'd be reduced to this." John then shook his head sadly and left, presumably to find cheaper blue creatures to use as chump blockers in the future.
