Movie Fails to Deliver Magical Goodness
March 15th, opening day of the new Fox Pictures movie "Ice Age", will prove to be a collossal disappointment for Magic players worldwide.
This movie, which is misleadingly titled after the 373 card standalone expansion, features none of the beloved characters from the set. For years there had been talk of a Magic: The Gathering movie, but once again, it was just empty rumors.
After seeing a sneak preview of the movie, I contacted Fox Pictures. My goal: to find out how they felt they could name their film after the Magic card set but fail to involve the game in any of the story.
The following is the unedited transcript of my interview:
FOX: Hello, This is Candice with Fox Pictures Promotional Department, how can I help you?
JONAS-: Yes, I noticed your company just released a film named "Ice Age" and wanted to ask a few questions about it.
F: Sure, what would you like to know?
J-: Well to begin, I noticed the film is called "Ice Age", yet there were no Kjeldorans featured in the film, why is that?
F: (Laughs) I'm not sure I know what a Kjeldoran is.
J-: What about the Outpost? Come on, surely you've played with the land!
F: The land? Do you mean the tundra that came from the big freeze?
J-: No, not "Tundra". Duals were only in earlier sets. However, this set did feature the painland counterparts. It also brought us the card drawing engine of Necropotence, although many didn't recognize its power early on in the set. What did the producers learn from the set?
F: Yeah, well, um... being a computer animated feature - there really was no set.
J-: Sure there was! I bought several boxes. I have about three thousand cards. What about Demonic Consultation?
F: Well there were no demons; it's a family film. We do have a cute little creature named 'Scrat!'
J-: Scrat? What's his power and toughness?
F: He's not very powerful, but he's definately tough. He's just this cute little guy that gets into all sorts of crazy situations.
J-: So he's like a Walking Wall that looks like Hyalopterous Lemure?
(At this point I think she was becoming a bit upset that I was asking all the hard hitting questions.)
F: Sir, what game are you playing here?
J-: Magic!
(Here, I distinctly heard someone fart, but I wasn't sure if it was her or my dog.)
F: Excuse me?
J-: Was that you? Oh wow, sure... you're excused.
F: I really have to be going.
(It must have been her, she has to go.)
J-: Okay, but if you can hold it for just a minute I have one more question.
F: Sure.
J-: WIll there be a sequel?
F: I'm not able to say anything at this point but we'll see.
J-: Well hopefully the sequel won't be as bad as the following expansions were. Hey - you can even give that Scrat critter some friends like Rysorian Badger!
F: -CLICK-
J-: Hello? Hello?
There you have it folks. Keep your eyes open for "Homelands" to be in theaters next year!
