Good Man of the week: David Price
David Price is OK by me.
The first time I saw Dave I was at a Neutral Ground $1000 tournament. With a punk hair style, a hoody, and the same sullen attitude he shows in his game today, he played the top 8 which was a limited format consisting of 2 starter decks of Mirage. I don't remember much about this, but he beat my teammate Aaron who was all of 14 at the time. Aaron was driven to tears. Mostly out of frustration, but I am sure Dave rattled him. We didn't know who this guy was, but we would learn soon enough.
Tempest Block Constructed. Everyone was well aware of how good Cursed Scroll was. Players were calling for an emergency banning. Red Beatdown decks were splashing white for disenchant. Dave knew better. Dave knew that beatdown, to stay consistent needed to be one color. What better way to beat the scroll than to make your men bigger? Giant Strength carried Dave to his first and only Pro Tour win.
As amazing as winning a PT is, Daves best accomplishment is that he has yet to miss a non-Worlds PT. His writing credits are innumerable, and has been a fan favorite since the dawn of time.
I called Dave a loser once. I made fun of him in a public forum for travelling to far for PTQs. Pikula happened to be listening and it got back to him. Dave confronted me, and I apologized. My relationship with the Deadguys goes back a long way, and I regret having said that, and communicated that to him.
Apparently all is forgiven as he gave me a hug in Osaka before I played the top 4 of the PTQ.
For all this, and making his first top 32 in a long time, David Price is this week's GMOTW.
