[REGIONALS 2002] : MORTAL KOMBAT
After waking up at 7:00 Saturday morning to no alarm what-so-ever, my friend and I showed up to the Ohio Valley Regionals in Columbus at 8:30, and we were not alone. Many of the others we play with had beat us there, it was quite a surprise, seeing that they had less sleep then we did. One of them Top 8, but that is not the point of this pile of randomness.
I came to find out that 2 of the guys I play with regularly came to regionals with a Battle of the Wits deck. Knowing them, they were unarmed in that battle.
My first friend played a four-color version, which I found later, some played as well. Three Battle of the Wits decks, thats insane. That also shows you how insane the meta-game was.
My other friend showed up with a blue-black version. He said he had had trouble trying to fill spots, but had eventually come up with a 246 card deck, with a horrible sideboard. That was straight from the horses mouth, not mine.
My friend had also had a bet going with his team mates. Apperently, he was running Mortal Combat in his deck. His team mates bet him that if he won one game with it, he would have to stand up and yell "MORTAL COMBAT", just like they did in the movies. You can guess what happens next.
Third round of ten (Yes 10, with no cutting), I was in a heated match with a counter burn deck after lossing to a B-G-r Opposition deck. During my turn, I hear "MORTAL KOMBAT" yelled from in the middle of the room. Completely reactionarey, I yell "Mortal Kombat", yet not so loudly. EVERYONE was applauding and laughing. The Judges did not agree with the humor. The player was given a severe warning and a game loss next round. He was also threated to be thrown out, and then not allowed to participate in the next Professional Events event.
I thought it to be quite hilarious. Everyone else I spoke with did too. Oh well, better luck next year.
Update: Correction from Mike Guptil
While most of this last paragraph is fairly accurate, the final sentance is 100% wrong. The players was NOT threatened to be removed nor participate in the next PES event. This needs to be modified to reflect what really happened, instead of giving 100% false impressions of what happened during one of my events.
Thanks,
Mike Guptil
