When you Wish

By: Reflection - April 19, 2002

When I read the spoiler for Judgement, my first thought was, "Wow, they printed a card that will make people put a copy of Fact or Fiction in their sideboard."

The card, of course, is Cunning Wish (2U, Instant, go fetch an instant you own from out of the game and put it in your hand). Assuming that for tournament play the most relevant "out of game" space is your sideboard, the Wish spells take the idea of a silver bullet approach to a new level. Now you only have to "waste" a sideboard slot for your situational cards like Hibernation. If you run four Cunning Wish to fetch your sideboard in game one, you'll probably want to run a copy of FoF in the board too, so that if none of your hoser instants seem necessary you can go fetch it instead.

This might have led to serious analysis or new decklists, but instead it led to the following song (sung to the tune of "When you wish upon a star").

When you Wish you'll be a star,
If you're a Blue mage you'll go far!
Instants hidden in your board
Will come to you.

Hibernation their whole team,
Or Slay with prejudice extreme!
Fact or Fiction waits if you've
Got nothing else.

Of course the Red Mage wishes too,
And Overmaster'll force them through,
A sideboard without Wildfire
Might be quite rare.

Death wish can get anything, but
Half your life is quite a sting!
Surely Wizards wouldn't print
A combo card.

Green and White this is your set,
Your wishes surely are the best!
Our last two verses will dissect
What came to you.

Golden Wish is very cheap
Five mana is hardly steep!
Just ask opponents nicely if
They'll wait for you.

Living Wish is also grand,
Which to choose, fattie or land?
Cards like this will never bring
Our Jamie back.
