Good Man of the Week: Randy Buehler
He may not be part of the Pro-Tour any more, but his presence is more than felt, and I am not just talking maximum occupancy here.
Randy retired from professional magic to become a member of the Wizards of the Coast Research and Development team. All I can say is thank the good lord. Randy jumped on a sinking ship, repaired the hole, and bailed the water. I don't mean to say others didn't help, but there is a clear difference in quality, balance, and playability. Everytime I fear a new move I am proved wrong.
As we all know, Randy had a very impressive Pro-Tour resume before he retired. Though despite rumors to the contrary, he did not win the invitational twice creating Canabalize and Goblin War-Buggy.
Always by the book, Randy once tried to get his opponent a match loss in money draft. In a related story he once cast Scent of Cinder as an instant against Jamie Parke in Nationals. In the subsequent Worlds, He got his first and only warning when he publicly announced that he was no longer willing to give friend Sigurd Eskeland an Extended deck over a matter of a Goblin Raider.
When he is not busy keeping Magic's head above water, he continues to be the only writer on http://www.magicthegathering.com with anything intelligent, amusing, or value adding to say. While I am angry at Randy about not mentioning my e-mail in last week's column, I keep myself at bay by thinking just how much cabs in Las Vegas cost.
All I have to say to any of you soothsayers who disagree with this pick for GMOTW, I ask you to remember Magic before Randy stepped in.
