Good Man of the Week: Ed Fear

By: KK - April 29, 2002

Though he was not my initial pick for this week, his recent charitable gesture to the Soma-PTR war has moved him up a little. Yes my good friends, the man with the best sideboard in Magic will show us what it truly means to be a good man.

I first met Edward George Fear about 4 years ago...

I went to a pro tour qualifier in Syracuse, NY and I had already been eliminated from contention. I look across the room from my side draft to see a huge crowd of people. A man not disimilar in looks to Satan himself would hurl a magic hard in a hard plastic sleeve into the crowd. I shook my head in disbelief as a poor unsuspecting soul was beaned with a Mahamoti Djinn. I was then told by Joe Weber that that guy was in the top 8 with him. There would be many more instances of card throwing, including a Mox which was picked up by the All-American Hero, Dennis Bently.

About 2 years later I am at a PTQ in his store. I am already qualified, but I came to cheer on some friends. Ed and I don't know each other too well, but I consider him a friend. I lost a lot in poker that night, all my money. Ed gave me a loan on the finger and didn't ask any questions. It was then I realized the beauty of the "Ed Fear Train."

You see dear friends, nothing makes Ed Fear happier than giving away money, except perhaps a good orgy. I realized how much he enjoyed giving things away at Grand Prix Pittsburgh where despite going 5-0 in the trial for our team. He posed a bit 0-5 in the GP itself. We all have our off days. Lord knows I have 0-ferd more times than I care to mention.

Ed may look like a sketchy character, goatee, dressed in all black, slicked back hair, but at least he doesn't cheat. So what if Ed draws cards off his sideboard. Terry Borer did it twice in that same PT. So it is clearly not illegal. It was the CIA and the KGB. It was a plot to have him drummed out, AND NO I AM NOT PARANOID!

And let's say for the sake of argument that Ed Fear IS a savage cheater, at least he looks good which is more than I can say for well over half the PT. Yeah, he steals sleeping babies, sacrifices them to the dark prince, and eats their hearts, but we all need a hobby.

Sorry, I got a bit tangential there. The point is Ed Fear is a generous man. He flew Kurt Hahn to GP Tampa in one of the biggest "helping the retarded" gestures in PT history. I mean, this man, this fat ugly man, had no chance of winning a match let alone any money, and Ed Fear flew him down. Kurt subsequently ditched Ed at the airport, made Ed pay for his hotel room, got DQ'd before the event started, and pissed on Ed's grandmother's grave. It is nice to know Ed's generosity isn't taken advantage of. (BTW Ed, thanks for the Nice tickets).

Now in the biggest display of altruism and fight promoting combined since Don King raped and murdered a small child while setting up a fight, Ed Fear has issued a challenge to Sol Malka and Peter Szigeti. As was expected by most of the magic community, PTR accepted and Soma is a giant giant pussy. He was nice enough to compare himself to Kai in his reply though.

So my intrepid readers, this is a long one for me, butI hold Ed Fear very close to my heart. Well, his wallet anyway.

I present your GMOTW: Lucif... errr Ed Fear!
