Good Man of the Week: "No Blocks" Davis
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Brian Davis would like to declare, “No blocks!”
You may know Brian from Decent PT finishes, to poor GP finishes, to completely throwing away the finals of his first ever Pro Tour. Don’t get me wrong, the fact that he reached this lofty goal in his first trip to the dance, is only barely eclipsed by the fact that his would be 3-0 victory turned into the most shameful of defeats.
While he does have an impressive resume, Brian is perhaps best known for his work with the HB Society of America. This most disadvantaged of groups is aided on a regular basis by Mr. Davis. However he will be the first to admit this is not a purely selfless act. The feeling he gets from aiding the poor women and girls with HB syndrome is second to none. While he spends more than his fair share of time with them, you can be sure they bend over backwards for him as well.
I first met Brian when I was recruited by Gary Wise to do a money draft with him and Davis. Brian managed a mere 1-2, as did I, and this would start a long trend of us losing money drafts on the same team. This streak would come to an end in Nice, France, but the streak of him screwing up on TV would not.
I am sure you have all heard the story so I won’t bore you with details. I will merely point out the fact that blocking lethal damage is usually a good move, for you kiddies studying the pros. Brian would like it said that he would have lost that game anyway… but F him.
To tell the truth I have to take full credit for Brian’s finish. On the Wednesday before the PT I convinced Brian to go to Monte Carlo with us. Now I had no idea that you can’t gamble under the age of 21 in this city, but Brian was nice enough to let me stay and walk back to the train and go back to Nice alone. I am convinced however that this fresh air, not normally had by a man like Davis, was critical to his victories.
Whether bashing his friends, screwing up in Magic, contemplating suicide, or spending quality time with those poor HBs, BDavis can always be seen with a smile on his face. It may be hard to see behind the mullet, but it is there. Any man brave enough to slap me on the ass while I am in my boxers more than deserves this honor.
Brian Davis, you have truly earned this week’s GMOTW! (And you thought that “no blocks” was a bad thing.
In a related story, the reported temperature in Hell was a brisk 28 degrees Fahrenheit.
