You Make The Crap Land - Step 14

By: dbuel - June 26, 2002

Well, our Magic: The Gathering "You Make The Crap Land" promotion is proceeding smoothly, and we're now advancing to the next stage. You Magic players have become a part of our card creation process here at Wizards of the Coast, by helping us to design the crappiest land ever.

The crap land's abilities, including the mana that it will produce, have been decided. Now we're ready to begin the next step, the process of letting players influence the crap land's art.

We've narrowed down the choices and held the votes, and this is the crap land as it exists so far:

Now that players have chosen the abilities for their "Dream Crap Land," the next step in the creation process is to choose a concept for the crap land's art. A card "concept" tells the artist what the crap land should look like.

A good concept should always convey a general idea of how the card works. It should also convey a sense of how crappy the card is. Players should be able to look at the card's art and tell from it immediately that the land is crap.

In contrast, a good concept should not micromanage the artist. It should not lead the artist in a direction that would make the crap land seem like a sorcery, or a creature, or playable in any format.

As an additional constraint, your concept is limited to 25 words or less.

Just in case you don't know what we mean, here are some concepts for some previous crappy cards:

Aven Trooper: A bird soldier flies through the air, thinking he will have some sort of effect on something.

Mudhole: A dwarf struggles in a sea of feces.

Overeager Apprentice: A dark and sinister mage embraces futility and existential despair.
