Draft Analysis of Yawgatog's Cards of the Week

By: Cade - July 03, 2002

In this article, I will evaluate all cards in the newest expansion, Yawgatog's Cards of the Week. Usually I like to discuss each color in a separate article to ensure all the information is in a spoon-fed and concise form. However, I've chosen to make an exception this time due to the smaller than normal card set and will be discussing all colors in this article. The other reason for this change is because the more articles I write, the more I get paid. Since I'm not getting paid for this bonus installment, I felt it best to confine this to only one article. Now on to the colors...

Many players have expressed disapproval with this set due to the exclusion of black cards. Disapproval would be an understatement, though, as cries of outrage and racism abound from players worldwide. Yawgatog has reportedly received numerous threatening phone calls, including death threats.

When finally reached for comment, Yawgatog has this to say about it, "This is the Blue set. 'Nuff said." Still, many players worldwide are dissatisfied with his decision to exclude blacks, and as a result, have filed lawsuit for the inclusion of several black cards to be added before the expansion's release.

Enough about the politics, though, let's talk about strategy. Upon initial analysis of this set, it appears that green has the strongest cards. Leading with the Nantuko Roadkill, your opponent is undoubtedly going to have difficulty casting his other spells as you lock down his Canadas. Double this up with the token generating Wakefield Shrine, and you have a serious contender.

Or so you think.

Realistically, only the Serra Angel / GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! archetype is going to play with Canadas, and as a result, Canada will not be played enough for Roadkill to be of much use. Also, the fact that Canada causes you to lose the game tends me to steer away from this in limited. Due to the fact that GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! is the only instant in the set, I'm not able to justify playing with it.

Still, that doesn't mean GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! isn't one of the most powerful cards in the set. It has the ability to swing games unexpectedly in your favor, as well as turn a clearly lost game into an instant win. However, due to the fact that this card is only good in decks with creatures, I actually find it to be rather unplayable except in the Nantuko Roadkill / GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! combo deck. Usually, by the time you can cast it, your opponent will likely be already running over you with blue creatures.

Speaking of which, that leads us to the most powerful color of the set, Blue. Swimming with the fastest creature in the set, Land Shark has bite. Being an uncommon, you should be able to pick these up not only early in the draft, but later as well. Land Shark deals some quick damage and paves the way for Genesis to join the savagery on turn 5. Considering the lack of removal in the format, I value these cards considerably high.

Although white only has one card, it is clearly the best card in the set. Not only does Serra Angel fly, but it's also a 4/4 for 5 that puts it on par with Genesis. The fact that it doesn't tap to attack ensures that Land Shark stays at bay. As mentioned before, playing red for GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! in this deck is key as it gives your opponent a 2-turn clock after the angel hits the board.

In closing, I'd like to remind you that no limited review of mine would be complete without ratings. Here you are:

Serra Angel
Genesis
Land Shark
GOOOOOOOOOOOAL!
Nantuko Roadkill
Wakefield Shrine
Canada
