Good Man of the Week: Richard Hoaen

By: KK - July 08, 2002

What can I say about Richard Hoaen. Not a heck of a lot, but I will do my best.

I first met Richie about a year ago. Derek, Chewie, Joe Weber, Dead Sped Al Bedell, Frank, Alex Melinkow, and I all went to Oshawa, ON for a teams PTQ. Joe and Sped had no third at the time and were hoping to pick one up at the PTQ. On the recommendation of Gab Tsang they took a chance on a spunky youngster named Rich. Don’t let his girth fool you, this kid is only 15 years old. He smokes like a chimney and sounds like Lauren Becall gargling assault, but he is only 15. After a stellar play game 1 round one of not responding to that 4/4 first striking gating guy by changing the color of the dude’s only creature with a visionary, he played well enough to earn Joe’s respect.

That was good enough for me. When Derek informed us he could not play with us in GP Columbus, I called up Richie. We didn’t do well at the GP, but it was a lot of fun.

Richard is a world class deck misreger. I first became aware of the problem in a PTQ in Ottawa. It was a teams event and Richie got himself a match loss. But this was merely the beginning of Monsieur Hoaen’s illustrious misreging career. He followed it up in the top 8 of the PTQ in Osaka. We were in opposite brackets in a 2 slot PTQ so we were looking to share the money and both walk out q’d for Nice. No such luck. Richie misreged his deck to include 2 more land than it should. 42 card deck 20 land and a game loss. He won his first round, but went down in the semis to the man I beat in the finals.

That brings us to Canadian nationals of this year. Anyone who read the coverage would know that riche made top 8. However only the truly diligent reader would know that he forgot to register 4 torment cards in his 2nd draft. He still managed to pull off a 2-0 after his match loss and make the top 8.

All this being said, for his top 8 at Candaian nats earning him CA$500 (approx US$4.13), for practially giving me lung cancer by looking at him, and mostly for making it so I wasn't that fattest one on my GP Columbus team, Richard Hoaen is this week’s Good Man of the Week.
