Eric "Danger" Taylor to Choose Card Art
After the results of the voting for Step 17 of the You Make the Card contest proved "not as unanimous as we'd like", Mark Rosewater and the staff of MagicTheGathering.com took matters into their own hands and elected a single-man voting committee to determine the art for "Mr. Babycakes". An announcement made at the bottom of the follow-up post to Step 17 is a message to the man chosen to cast the deciding vote:
Whoever of these three artists gets the most votes in the run-off will have the honor of illustrating the first ever (but not last) “You Make the Card”. The deadline for this vote is midnight EDT, Sunday, July 21st. Happy voting!
Yes, Eric “Danger” Taylor has been selected to choose from among the three artists, Matt Cavotta, Jim Nelson, or Mark Tedin, who will be commissioned to draw the art for Mr. Babycakes.
The decision to appoint edt was made official by Mark Rosewater, who seemed infuriated by the results of the first set of artist polls when interviewed.
"I couldn't believe the results when they came in. Taking the decision out of the hands of the public was a drastic measure, but it had to be done. Who would've thought that players wouldn't be warned off of voting for Jim [Nelson] and Matt [Cavotta], with the art samples we had for them? I mean, come on, Bellowing Fiend? Scandalmonger? Those cards are atrocious. And to anyone who would play Fungal Shambler: really, you won't feel the bullet, I swear.
“I admit, Mark Tedin had been the favorite to win from the beginning, in our eyes. We were betting on the vast majority of voters to be attracted to his drawings of 7/7 or larger creatures with trample, and we have no idea what turned voters off enough to not give him the win immediately.”
He added as a final comment: “Maybe trample is too complicated a mechanic?”
