Good Man of the Week: Joseph Gary Wise
OK, OK I know you are all sick and tired of non-funny articles, so I have decided to take a step back into the realm of humor. Since this transition will be tough, I have chosen an easy target for my comeback… Gary Wise. Fortunately, for the integrity of the award, he also happens to be one hell of a good man.
Gary Wise was the first non-sped, non-Deadguy, non-ECA pro I became friends with. Without knowing me all that well, the man invited me to stay at his house with Jamie Parke, Ben Farkas, and Joe Weber. This was especially nice since the invitation came at the expense of his mom. Now don’t fault Gary for living with his mom, lots of guys live with their mom’s until they are 40.
Gary finally busted into top 8 the same year that Jamie did, and the first in a long line of PTs that that German would win. He would go on to win a teams PT along side fellow GMOTW Mike Turian, and fellow large man Scott Johns. Winning a teams PT, sadly, doesn’t bring the same recognition that winning an individual PT does, so Gary was still maligned. In fact, it seems the better Gary does, the more he is put down. This may have something to do with his being a pompous ass, or that could just be wild speculation on my part.
Gary’s loud mouth eventually got him thrown out of the third world nation we like to call, Canada. He moved onto Jolly Ole England where his game seemed to drastically improve. He started putting up consistent finishes rather than a big win here and there which is truly the mark of a good player, despite what the money and PT point distributions say.
Gary’s biggest accomplishment, however, came in this past World Championships. There was this kid in the tournament, let’s call him KK. KK was down 0-3 and feeling pretty bad about Magic after 2 triple mulligans in game 3 in 2 of those matches. Gary took this lad aside and told him that he could do anything. Taught him to reach for the stars, and to Hades with anyone who said different. And you know what this boy did? He went on to win his next 12 matches and make top 8. I’m going to let you in on a little secret, that boy… was me.
So for any of you naysayers out there who think Gary Wise is anything but, I award Joseph Gary Wise this week’s Good Man of the Week!
