Good Man of the Week: Matt Linde

By: KK - December 15, 2002

We have here one of the best men to ever grace the pages of MiseTings. Matt Linde and I first met sitting next to each other at a poker table at Origins. He had just finished unsuccessfully defending his title and wanted a little action. He didn’t know much about the game (Which of course we were just playing for fun. We would never think of running a live poker game at a Magic Tournament). I helped him out a little and we both ended up about $250 (Fake money of course. We would never think of running a live poker game at a Magic Tournament).

Matt and I slowly became better friends as time progressed.

Matt proved he was no one hit wonder by finishing top 4 in Worlds the year after he was National Champion. He went on to top 8 a couple Grand Prix and top 16 a few PTs. He is still alive and well on the train after his top 32 in Houston.

A phrase often associated with Matt is “Matt Linde is 12 years old.” Matt was observed by no less than 2 people throwing his life keeping pen as high as he could and catching it. This all went on in the middle of the PT Houston venue. Soon after he had lost all interest in the pen he began running full force into another former National Champion, Kyle Rose.

During GP Cleveland a stunning realization was reached. While getting addicted to cigarettes at tournaments, Matt, Dave Price and I were out chatting on the porch. It hit us that we were, in fact, the 3 worst players on the Gravy Train. I feel this is quite an accomplishment. Plus I can’t think of many better people to be in the company of.

Matt and I both talk about skipping GPs, but time and time again we see each other at these events. He recently broke the chain, however, by not attending GPLA. Even during the week of the GP when Huey informed me they weren’t coming I still held out hope. Not having Huey and Linde there was a disappointment only offset by the fact that I T4’d, Ed Fear Q’d, and Phil won the whole thing. Not to mention Bob and Brian joining me in the top 4.

Now that my digression into my gassy performance is over, I would like to declare Matt Linde Good Man of the Week!
