Good Man of the Week: Tight Tommy
This is a long time coming. This honor was preempted last week due to my experiences in New Orleans, but it is the third in the series commemorating my best PTQ experience of all time.
The first time I met Tom Guevin he was banned from dribbling a basket ball at the tournament site for Regionals in Boston. This was a long time ago when he didn’t have to play in such tournaments. He is all washed up now, but his spirit lives on. He has actually managed to maintain decent ratings that keep him hanging around, and somehow his brother Pete got on the train while no one was looking.
Tom also attended that infamous tournament in Syracuse. Tom had a much tougher time in that tournament. He was heard in the 0-2-1 bracket singing Counting Crows “I’ve Been Hangin’ Around.” One of my favorite quotes of his was while I was activating my Crooked Scales, “That is what I like to hear at a Magic tournament ‘heads or tails?’”
I truly love Tom. In fact, I have gained so much respect for him I am not even going to mention the time that Hammer got him so rattled in the finals of a Pro Tour that he had to leave the match to throw up.
Tight Tommy has one of the best mental games out there, despite the little vomit incident that I won’t talk about. He is one of the only people left in the game that could go head to head with Peter Szigeti. At Pro Tour New Orleans last year I witnessed a run in between the two psychological masterminds and it was one of the most entertaining sights of my life.
So for being one of the best things to ever happen to the game of Magic, and for being certifiably insane, I award Thomas Guevin Good Man of the Week!
