WoTC Staff Disappointed by Choice of 'Artifact' in Poll
RENTON, WASHINGTON - It was a disappointing week for Wizards of the Coast R&D when a tally of the votes for You Make The Card 2 revealed "Artifact" to be the winner.
"We were all set to have an exciting, unique card added to the 'Bacon' spoiler... when we heard it was going to have to be an artifact," pouted Mark Rosewater, head of R&D. "How are we going to break it to the You Make The Card crowd that their card is going to have to suck?"
Rosewater's thoughts were expanded upon by Randy Buehler, another R&D member. "It's strictly a color wheel thing. You see?" Buehler pointed to various areas on a chart. "Here, we have white on this graph... they get weenies... red has direct damage... and green gets the ground fatties, and so forth, you see?" Buehler then turned the chart over and indicated a small smudge on its backside. "That, right there, that's artifacts. We're not allowed to make those anymore. I think."
"Buehler's not entirely correct, but he's on the right track," Rosewater added. "You see, this new artifact we're going to have to make for Bacon... if it's good, you'll suddenly see four of it in every deck. We'd hate to have that sort of consistency on the tournament scene, not to mention the money it could make. No, we're going to have to render this card useless."
All is not lost for R&D, though. If "Artifact Creature" manages to edge out "Non-Creature Artifact", then they still have a legitimate shot at making the card fair for tournament play. "Allow me to quote the Fourth Edition Rulebook," said Rosewater. "'Artifact Creatures are vulnerable to both spells that target creatures and spells that target artifacts.' With that sort of a disadvantage, we might be able to render this thing unplayable."
The team is already considering mechanics submissions for this new artifact. Their favorites so far include "Put any number of overcosted counters on [CARDNAME] as it comes into play" and "Slightly support whatever god-damn mechanic Bacon introduces."
