Magic Online Worlds Qualifier Won by Netdeck

By: Piemaster - April 30, 2003

The Magic Online community was shocked Sunday when the World Championship Qualifier was controversially won by a “netdeck”. After 12 rounds of grueling competition, Standard guru Gainsay won the competition with a deck that has come to be known as Psychatog. Although he had made some alterations to the deck, it was essentially the same deck that has been seen on the Internet for many months.

"I am delighted," said the jubilant winner. "I didn't really have a deck for this weekend so I was forced to copy one off the net. I thought I would be at a big disadvantage because people had heard of my deck before and were ready for it but I guess I just got lucky."

Andrew Cuneo, lucky noob.
In a remarkable string of results, Gainsay, who goes by the name of Andrew Cuneo “in real life,” won the tournament by the sheer luck of being paired mainly against other netdecks. "I guess I was a bit lucky,” he admitted. "In the whole tournament I never faced one truly original deck. If I had faced any Sliver or Skirk Prospector Combo decks I probably would have been done for. As it was I was facing relatively weak U/G and R/G builds that just don't cut it in today’s rogue environment."

Longtime proponent of the deck Zev Gurwitz was also delighted. "I'm amazed," he said. "I mean Psychatog won a few tournaments back when it was original, but I can't believe it can still win. Don't people ever learn? How it managed to finish above all the excellent rogue decks out there I don't know."

Not everyone was so happy about the result however. David Scrubly summed up the feelings of many players had. "It makes me sick," he said. "Someone who clearly can't build a deck of their own has gone and won the tournament. His deck was so terrible! I played him in the qualifyer tournament and got mana screwed in both games. And I never drew that Circle of Protection: Blue I sideboarded in either! What a lucky noob."
