Orb Of Insight Reveals Magic Product Placement

By: dbuel - May 05, 2003

Magic players all over the world became excited this week due to a surprising discovery as Wizards of the Coast returned its popular "Orb of Insight" feature at the official Magic: The Gathering Web site.

The astonishment began as some players entered keywords and discovered Magic's first-ever product placement, as those players entered the keyword "Karona."

"Karona" appears three times in the set Scourge, revealing the existence of the Karona card. Players have ascertained that Karona is a 7/7 Libation with a casting cost of 1WUBRG.

"This is an exciting opportunity for us to allow players of this game all around the globe to learn about our refreshing product," said Corona spokeswoman Tina Gaffney.

"As players roll dice and move around while playing this game, they'll get thirsty. Corona Extra, which is miles away from ordinary, is the perfect complement to this exciting science-fiction game."

Corona Extra is a leading brand of the Modelo group, which brews its beers in Mexico.

One bottle of Corona Extra contains 148 calories, Gaffney said.

Players eagerly anticipated the debut of the card, which lucky players could find in boosters during the Scourge Prerelease Tournaments.

"This card is fantastic. I'll put into both my Type II and my Type I decks," said player Roy Spires. "And it has incredible art. I know, because I'm an expert on card art."

Gaffney said that the company was looking forward to more product tie-ins with Magic: The Gathering.

"My understanding is that there could be a whole what they call 'mega-cycle' of these cards. Perhaps we'll make a Corona Extra card that lets you roll some extra dice or fire extra lasers or something."
