DCI Banned And Restricted Update Update

By: Rochester - June 11, 2003

Renton, WA -- After making the official press release regarding the restriction of an as-of-yet uninvented Darksteel card in Type 1, further information was learned in regards to the Banned and Restricted List. Up next on the chopping block: Everything before Eighth Edition.

Mark "Bling Bling" Rosewater was overheard referencing the upcoming banning of almost the entire game in Extended, and its restriction in Type 1, as he left the pressroom with Richard Garfield and Randy Buehler. It was learned that this unprecedented banning of an entire block was for the "good of the game," though Rosewater indignantly refused to expand on that.

Richard Garfield offered inside information. "Magic is a game of cohesion. Different mechanics and flavors blending together, that sort of thing. Sometimes, when very strong themes are too different to blend, one of them has to go. Eighth will be the first set released with the new card faces, and the dissymmetry is just too disruptive to the game. This is what the players want." He coughed, and added, "At least that's what Rosewater tells me."

Randy Buehler offered further commentary. "You see, it's all economics. For instance, let's say I have a card game and I want doughnuts. Now, if I just sell the cards once, I can buy a hundred doughnuts... but good Lord, a hundred doughnuts just won't cut it! You need millions, MILLIONS of doughnuts! Oh.. oh man..." He trailed off into guttural moans. This reporter fled before he could be drowned in the tidal wave of saliva flowing from Buehler's gaping maw.

Type 1 players at large were infuriated by what they perceive as a total annihilation of their way of life. Oscar Tan and Pat Chapin could not be reached for comment, as both were meeting with the Michigan Militia, hurriedly preparing for post-apocalyptic survivalism.

A local ten-year-old was unfazed by the news, as he had recently learned that his Krosan Cloudscraper deck, bearing one copy of the title card and 59 Forests, would still be legal in Standard for another year.

When asked for comment Trey Van Cleave responded, "And this affects me.... how?"
