Make Over Controversy for the Magic Community

By: ronin408 - June 20, 2003

The debate began last month when a high school senior applying for college was enraged when he realized that magic is regarded as a collectible card game and not an intellectual extreme sport where high profiled colleges, CIA recruiters, and realty shows search for the next American Model. Philip goes on to write, “I hate this stereotype. I want it gone.”

Fuel was added to the fire when 6-year veteran, Starr, a mind reader with the ability to tap into both human and mutant thoughts, as well as being the Oracle’s niece, stated the following: The public tends to blame Magic for turning youths into unwashed, obese, immature social outcasts. Although it is unclear whether or not she agrees with the public opinion, it is not important. What is important is the following comment, “’Another girl and I frequently go to large Magic tournaments and she always notes when we leave, "The guy playing Burning Wake in the third round was such a stud....’”

The importance of making the third round playing Burning Wake cannot be overlooked. Realization that Sligh, MBC, and R/G Beats are not the babe magnets we had expected them to be, gives us incredible card advantage in the game of mating. (Side note: Reports have come in that the metagame has suddenly shifted away from agro to control as thousands of men begin to sport T-shirts with the following catch phrase, “Don’t Wake Me I’m Burning”.)

As the debate over the makeover for the magic community continues, Kevin’s rebuttal to Starr’s premonition has also become a source of much controversy. He writes, “But the real corker is the question in the middle: "Do they start out that way and gravitate toward Magic as a way to get fame and fortune by doing little?"” He goes on to answer the question brought to light by Starr, but does not address the issue of why he chose to use the word “corker”. How can any duelist feel comfortable being associated to the Magic community, when those that report on the game itself use words like “corker”?

On a final note, Geordie, another witty writer and a mind reader in his own right, had the following to say concerning Starr and Philip’s complaints, “Bunk. 99% of the mainstream has no interest anyway.” It is clear that the controversy over “corker” and now “bunk” will continue for some time.
