Some Guy Finishes 40th at GP, Gets No Respect
Joshua Claytor, known to most as "some guy," got no respect two weeks ago on his way to a stellar 40th place finish at GP Minneapolis.
". . . to my surprise, there is a link to the decks of name players. I search the list, and I find out that I have been excluded from that list. Jesus, I only write for three websites and one magazine. What am I going to have to do to get any respect from the people who run these things? What can I do to get noticed?"
One way to get noticed may be to make really bad plays at a GP, then write a tournament report describing your incompetence in full detail.
"He knocks me to two life with the Angel, and during his end step I take my Rage and put him at four, which makes me have to draw the Bolt off the top for the win. I breathe, look at my card, and flip it into play. It was the twelfth land I needed in order to Rage with Kicker him out of the game."
On top of the ridiculous lack of respect for "some guy," the Sideboard staff poured salt on the wounds by not awarding the man even one lousy feature match!
"I was paired against four name players, and never once got a feature match, nor was my deck on the name players listing. Remember, I am still a pretty regular writer on Magic."
Not all is sour grapes for "some guy." He did manage to pilot his Counter Trenches deck to victory in 3 matches of the 9 he played. Combine that with three byes and one opponent not showing up, and you get a respectable 40th place finish, placing higher than several "name" players.
"Name players that I finished above: Seth Burn, Andy Stokinger, Michael Turian, Adrian Sullivan, Mike Hron, Danny Mandel, Peter Szigeti, Chad Ellis. What does that list prove? Am I almost worthy of respect now? Can I really hang out with the big boys?"
The answers to these questions are unknown, but we salute you "some guy," and wish you the best of luck in your quest for glory.
