Wizards Release New D&D Based Set

By: BadTech - September 22, 2003

Renton, WA - Upcoming Magic: the Gathering expansion Mirrodin will have strong ties to the popular Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, it was revealed today. "Yu-Gi-Oh just wasn't cutting it for us" Mark Rosewater said in a press release. "There's only so much you can steal from another card game before you run out of ideas."

Mark said that so many of the developers didn't have lives outside of Magic, but those that did played Dungeons and Dragons in their parents' basements.

"It was a natural transition. We wanted to be able to play D&D and Magic at the same time, but our DM would never let us," a developer commented. "One time he made me lose a level just because I joked about the 'X' on a fireball spell one of my characters cast."

When asked about the new set Randy Buehler said that Glissa Sunseeker "would be a really cool card," because that was the name of the babe character he always plays whenever he plays Dungeons and Dragons. "So many of the guys were afraid to role-play as women, but I've always been the dangerous one. Plus, she was really hot. Not 'only-person-with-estrogen-at-a-PTQ-hot,' but really hot."

"She's a 24th level Cleric/Mage/Warrior Elf under old Second Edition rules. Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato were in production so long ago that we didn't have time to steal anything from 3rd or 3.5 edition rules."

"It's definitely my favorite card. I can't wait to equip her with the Hand Axe +2 that we designed. I mean, it only does 1d6+2 damage on a small to medium sized creature, but you can still throw it."

Randy admitted that the Loxodon elephant-like race did indeed come from the 2nd Edition Monstrous Manual, but the Loxodon's magical warhammer "was totally his DM's idea."

When asked to respond to the fact that equipment isn't officially a new card type Randy replied, "I didn't mean new card type as in land, sorcery, artifact, creature, instant, etc. I meant new card type as in 'idea that hasn't been stolen by WoTC yet'."

"Imprint is this new mechanic that R&D made, where we couldn't really come up with anything at all, so finally we decided on this brilliant idea of letting the players design the new set. That way we could sell them their own ideas. It's similar to selling virtual cards - oh, and it's based on Legos."

"Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato is going to be a really good set, provided the players can finish all of the imprint cards I've made, and that no one finds all of the pieces to the Rod of Seven Parts. That could be disastrous at a PTQ. All those Drow running around…."

"Our next set - codenamed Ctrl-Alt-Delete is either going to be based on the new Matrix movie, or Transformers. It's still in testing."

The Mirrodin Pre-release is September 20th, but players can find pictures of the new cards on eBay, under out of print Dungeons and Dragons material.
