Wizards Announces Online “1800 Room” to be Phased into “1598 Room”

By: beauka - November 11, 2003

In an online message forum, Wizards of the Coast’s Magic Online spokesperson Daniel Myers announced that what was formally the Premium 1800 Room (currently under the interim heading “1700 Room”) will soon be opening its doors to more players in a number of “barely noticeable reductions in the minimum rating requirement.”

“Going over our data a third time, we realized that over half of the players who visited the 1800 Room waited in the draft queues for over an hour with no actual draft actually starting up. We have personally apologized to those 12 players, whose experience has helped finalize our decisions in making these small changes.”

“Now that our brilliant idea of the 1700 Room is booming, regularly seeing 40 to 42 players in the draft room, we decided to cash in on this frenzy and see if we could lure in more players,” He said. “So as of tomorrow’s MTGO update, the 1700 Room (formerly the 1800 Room, formerly the 1800 Composite Room), will become the 1600 Room. This will allow many of the newer and less experienced players a chance to be one of the ‘big guys’.”

Myers then added, “However, when we reviewed the ratings of our player base, we discovered that somehow, the average mean rating of all active and non-active players came to 1598. While no one has a friggin’ clue how this happened, we have decided that at next week’s update, the soon-to-be 1600 Room will then officially become the 1598 Room. That means players who have a 1598 rating in either Limited or Constructed will be allowed into the sacred room. Be warned, however, that we may STRONGLY consider switching the room back to a composite rating threshold at some time in the future.”

Finally, the announcement added that now that the regular draft queues are going to a 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 payout structure, the Premium 1800/1700/1600/1598 Room queues will be switching to the higher payout level of 4-3-2-2.

“Clearly,” Myers stated, “this change rewards those players with the higher ratings by allowing them to win more prizes. The 1 pack to all players prize structure will ‘still’ be used in all of the regular queues, but we felt we should give a bit more to our more advanced player base. Also, the new 1598 Room will have improved access and maintenance of the restrooms for all avatars.”
