Dean Excited About New 'Electionfire!' Trading Card Game

By: dbuel - February 17, 2004

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Presidential candidate Howard Dean announced Monday that he was excited about his involvement with Wizards of the Coast's upcoming "Electionfire!" collectible trading card game.

"Electionfire!" is Wizards of the Coast's new game where players act as party chairmen and "Master the politics" by playing cards from their own customized decks against each other, Dean said Monday.

The Electionfire! card game will play much like Spellfire did, Dean said.

"Basically, nothing will have a 'mana cost' or anything like that, so whoever has the most money will just buy the best cards and win!" he said. "It's very exciting."

Dean will act as a spokesman for the game and for Wizards of the Coast. There will also be a card representing him, as well as cards for President Bush, Sen. John Kerry and other important election personalities like Carol Moseley Braun.

"Look, look, I just played a 'HERRRRUUUUAAAAUUUGH' on your campaign stack," Dean said Monday while demonstrating the game by playing against campaign chairman Steven Grossman. "That means you have to discard three cards and sacrifice a manager."

Grossman quit the campaign shortly thereafter Monday.

Dean said that players will have fun trying to collect all of the cards.

"A few cards might be really hard to find," Dean said. "For example, the Weapons of Mass Destruction card, No. 351, may or may not really exist.

"Other cards in the first set might not really be cards," he added. "Card No. 275 is actually a campaign poster and not really a card at all. Good luck finding it!"

A few renowned Magic: The Gathering players were critical while having fun testing the new game Monday.

"Oh my God, Chinese Influence is like Ancestral except it draws you five cards and doesn't cost anything to play," Zvi Moshowitz said, rolling his eyes. "And Intern Rumor is Hymn to Tourach! This game is already completely broken."
