New Game Explained Entirely in Terminology of Magic: the Gathering

By: Durban - April 23, 2004

New Duel Masters Trading Card Game.
At an introductory Duel Masters tournament last week, the organizer Michael Levy managed to give the players a quick but complete understanding of the rules without making any reference to Duel Masters' vernacular, instead the game was explained solely with the terminology of Magic: the Gathering.

Levy began by explaining that "there aren't any land cards, you can just put any card into play upside down and it counts as a basic land of that color. Furthermore, the number on the top left is the converted mana cost, and all you need to know is that at least one of those has to be of the right color."

The combat interactions were also done without any reference to terms such as "Shields" or the "Shield break mechanic". Levy simply explained, "You each have 6 life, each player basically has a Farsight Mask in play, and a kind of Forcefield which triggers every time you take damage. So what happens when you're attacked is...well you know what happens."

He continued "Every creature has a Tracker ability, which costs tapping to activate, can be played as a sorcery, and can only target tapped creatures. It’s kind of like magic, except without artifacts, enchantments, instants, land destruction, first strike, trample...well you get the picture."

"Oh yeah, remember guys: only creatures that say 'blocking' can actually block. All right, have fun."
